You sat through a six-week checkup, got a nod, and heard some version of “you’re cleared for exercise.” Then you went home with no plan, no order of operations, and a body that doesn’t feel anything like it did before. That clearance is real — it means it’s safe to start moving again. It is not a plan, and it is definitely not permission to pick up where you left off.
Here’s the part nobody tells you in that appointment: strength doesn’t come back in the order you’d expect. The muscles you can see aren’t the ones doing the most important work right now. Your deep core and pelvic floor were stretched, compressed, and asked to do an enormous job for nine months, and they need to be reconnected and retrained before they can support anything heavier on top of them.
That’s why we start there — not because it’s cautious for the sake of being cautious, but because skipping it is how you end up with coning, leaking, or a nagging ache that never quite resolves. Ten minutes of breath and connection work isn’t a warm-up you rush through to get to the “real” workout. For the first few weeks, it is the real workout.
Progress you build on a shaky foundation isn’t progress. It’s a loan you’ll have to pay back later, usually with interest.
Once that foundation is doing its job — and you’ll feel it, a kind of quiet stability that wasn’t there before — the rest follows in an order that makes sense to your body. Full-body strength at low load first: hips, glutes, and your back, the muscles that have been carrying a baby all day whether you’ve noticed or not. Then, and only then, real progressive overload with weight in your hands.
None of this is about being fragile. It’s about being sequenced. A six-week clearance tells you the door is open. What you do once you walk through it is the actual work — and it’s a lot more interesting than “just start where you left off.”
If you want that sequence built for you instead of guessed at, that’s exactly what Postpartum is.
